Surprising Non-Veg Recipes You Haven’t Tried

India has a huge wealth of non-veg food which are brought about by the influences of the various cultures that have left their mark on the sub-continent. However, when we think about non-veg food in India we normally default to butter chicken, biryani or other dishes that originate in the north of India. While these dishes are amazing there are lesser known treasures that are equally delicious, which is why we have compiled a list of some Indian non-veg recipes that you won’t get at every restaurant.

What does Indian non-veg food look like? 

The recipes we have collected are delicious but varied in flavor from what you would expect from Indian non-veg food. The slight changes in flavor profile that happen from north to south, east to west completely change our perception of food and can lead to a more enjoyable experience. So let’s take a look at some of these recipes.

1. Egg Curry

While eggs might not be at the top of our minds when discussing non-veg food, it makes for a great option when you are in the mood for something that isn’t the typical chicken curry. Egg curries have been adapted all over India but the South Indian classic packs a punch of flavor that sets it apart from other versions.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Boiled eggs
  • 2 onions
  • 1 Tomato
  • 2 tsps ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp badshah garam masala
  • 1 tsp badshah chicken masala
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 green chili
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil
  • ½ cup of water

Method:

  1. In a heated pan add oil
  2. Once the oil has heated add mustard seeds, cumin and curry leaves, cooking until they start to sputter
  3. Add your sliced onions and saute until browned
  4. Mix in your tomatoes and cover, allowing the mixture to break down
  5. Once the tomatoes have completely softened, remove the lid and let the water evaporate
  6. Mix in your remaining spices and cook for one more minute
  7. Add your water and bring to a boil
  8. Add salt to taste and place the eggs in the curry
  9. Cook for an additional two minutes
  10. The curry is now done and can be served

2. Chicken Thoran

Thoran as a concept generally means a dish that is stir fried with shredded coconut. For the most part, we see this done with vegetables for a quick side dish but it works just as well with chicken.

Ingredients:

  • 500 gm of chicken breast
  • 2 tsp of red chili powder 
  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 cup of grated coconut
  • 3/4 cup of sliced shallots
  • 2 tsp of garlic paste
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp of oil
  • 1 tsp of black mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp of urad dal

Method:

  1. In a heated pan, add your oil and chicken,
  2. Add haldi and red chili and some salt cooking until the chicken is just cooked through
  3. Remove the chicken and add your mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves
  4. Now add your shallots and fry until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add your garlic paste and saute for a minute
  6. Next, add the cooked chicken pieces to this along with salt. Mix well.
  7. Finally, add the coconut, mix, and simmer for 3-4 mins until no excess moisture left.
  8. Serve with rice and enjoy!

3. Goan Prawn Curry 

A prawn curry is a staple of any seaside area and the Goan version of a prawn curry is wonderfully rich and flavorful.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g jumbo prawns
  • 1 tbsp badshah kashmiri chili powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste 
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp tamarind paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • Salt to taste
  • 10 curry leaves

Method:

  1. In a pan, heat coconut oil and ginger garlic paste and onions.
  2. Saute the onions till they are a golden brown and add tomatoes. 
  3. Cook the tomatoes till they break down
  4. Add the masalas and salt to the pan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the flame and simmer the masala for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Add the shelled prawns to the gravy and cook them till tender.
  6. Sprinkle curry leaves on top, mix well and switch off the flame.
  7. Let the curry rest and serve hot

Non-Standard Non-Veg Food

There is no standard non-veg food because traditions and flavors change in every state and every town but it is always good to step outside your comfort zone and try some recipes that you might not have otherwise.
