Ingredients to make Ukadiche Modak:

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup jaggery, grated
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • A pinch of salt
  • For garnish:
  • Saffron strands
  • Ghee

Method to make these steamed modaks :

  1. In a pan, heat ghee, add grated coconut, and roast until it turns light golden. Then, add grated jaggery and cardamom powder. Stir well until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  1. In a separate pan, bring water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, and gradually add rice flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the dough until it leaves the sides of the pan. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  1. Knead the dough into a smooth, pliable consistency.
  1. Take a small portion of the dough, and flatten it with your fingers to form a small disc. Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the centre.
  1. Gently fold the edges of the dough to cover the filling and shape it into a modak. Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling.
  1. Steam the modaks in a steamer for about 15-20 minutes until they become firm and translucent.
  2. Garnish with saffron strands and a drizzle of ghee before serving.

These Ukadiche Modaks are ready to offer to Lord Ganesha and enjoy with family and friends during the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. Check out more recipes for festivals.
